"The crystal is the heart of the blade.
The heart is the crystal of the Jedi.
The Jedi is the crystal of the Force.
The Force is the blade of the heart.
All are intertwined."

Lightsabers have been a part of the Jedi Order since nearly its inception and has come to represent a symbol throughout the galaxy. They are powerful weapons in the hands of one who has been trained in the Force, but also represent civility and honor as it forces one to combat on a personal level. When a Jedi leaves his or her period as a Youngling and becomes an Apprentice (or Padawan if they are immediately chosen), they are given a lightsaber to use. The color of this initial blade is generally blue or sometimes green. However after being chosen to become a Padawan, they are brought to the planet Ilum upon which lies the Jedi Temple which houses the crystal caves. Here the Padawan will be taught about the construction of lightsabers and a blade will be made for him. Generally this blade is also blue or green as those are the most common crystals in the cave. Near the end of their apprenticeship under a Master, they will return to Ilum to construct a lightsaber of their own and choose their final color, a very personal decision for each Jedi. Those colors include silver, yellow, orange and purple.

Just so everyone is clear on things regarding lightsabers, the following things should be made note of when it comes to personalized lightsabers:

  • When creating a Jedi Knight's Ilum-built lightsaber, the Knight-to-be (or Knight in chargen) is expected to write a custom desc for the weapon that will be scrutinized for theme/spelling/grammar.
  • Electrum, phrik, cortosis, or anything rare/unusual in the casing may be rejected. Only a Jedi Master would have electrum, for example.
  • A curved blade is permitted but doesn't change any stats.
  • The only stat that changes is that the creator of a lightsaber gets +1 to attack on it. That's it, period.
  • Customizations cost more and will rarely be granted. This is a hide-bound Jedi Order, not really a trick out your 'saber sort of mentality in this time.
  • Great lightsabers for non-huge creatures or lightdaggers for non-small creatures are frowned upon in this time.
  • Lightsabers are rarer than usual in this time due to an as-yet-unsolved theft TP, so there will be an extremely small number of Jedi permitted to carry two lightsabers at once, and they are the only ones being actively trained to dual-wield. The Jedi Council will not permit Jedi to start raping Ilum's crystal supply to replace those lost lightsabers.
  • A corollary to that is that lightsabers that require multiple crystals (dual-phase, dual-blade) are frowned upon.
  • While it should go without saying, we'll say it anyway. Jedi will not be permitted to create a lightsaber that has a red blade due to the IC links to the Sith.
